- POQUOSON, Va. — John “Jack” Spates, 90, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Dominion Village Assisted Living, in Poquoson. Jack was a native and lifelong resident of Frostburg, until moving to Poquoson in 2010. He served in the US Army during World War II as a medic in Burma. After the war he worked in the family business which owned and operated the Palace and Lyric movie theaters in Frostburg. He also worked 20 years for Dr. Poland and Dr. Cook as an optician assistant. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Elks and a charter member of Maple Hurst Country Club. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Spates; mother, Julia (Smith) Spates; wife, Mildred (Porter) Spates; and brothers, William and Maurice Spates. He is survived by his sister, Virgina Gnegy of Florida; nieces, Mary Frances Baker and husband, Bob of Virginia, Diane Clement of California, Anne Kulpinski of Vermont, Patty Chaney of Maryland; nephews, Mark Spates of Virginia, Jack Gnegy of South Carolina, Richard Gnegy of Illinois and Bill Spates of Washington, D.C.; sister-in-law, Ruth Spates of Maryland; and several other nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank his caregiver, Elaine Jacobs. Services will be private. Donations may be made in his memory to the Ameican Cancer Society.
