- FROSTBURG -- Mildred M. "Chop" Spates, 79, of 29 Teaberry Lane, Frostburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at her residence. Born April 24, 1921, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late Walter W. and Mary (Bruner) Porter. Mrs. Spates was retired from the Allegany County Board of Education having served as a teacher's assistant for 15 years at the following schools: Virginia Avenue, South Penn and John Humbird. She was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church and the Allegany County Retired Teachers Association, and received an honorary life membership in the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers for special services to children. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, John J. "Jack" Spates; two sisters, Eleanor P. Tennant, Cumberland, and Marion M. Henaghan, St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Center; several nieces and nephews; and a very special niece, Mary Frances Filer Baker and husband Robert, Yorktown, Va. Private funeral services were conducted at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Dec. 8, 2000, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Darryl Gill officiating. Interment was in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Contributions in her memory may be directed to the Frostburg United Methodist Church, 48 W. Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532. Pallbearers were Mark Spates, Dr. Doug Cook, Dr. James Poland, Kurt Harper and Jim Byrnes. Honorary pallbearers were Moe Spates, Richard Weimer and Dr. Nelson Guild.
