"ONE DEAD, TWO ILL FROM GAS"

"A Decatur man died from asphyxiation today and his wife and one-month-old daughter nearly died in a three room bungalow on Decatur's far east side."

"Found dead on the floor of his home at 8:20 a.m. was Richard D. Lanum, 22, of 1001 N. 33rd St. His wife, Sallie Katherine, 24, and daughter Theresha (sic) were taken to St. Mary's Hospital where the mother is in critical condition. The baby is doing fine, according to hospital officials."

"Deputy Coroner J. Earl Lynch said Lanum apparently was sitting near the furnace treating a blister he received on his hand while bowling last night, when he became ill and fainted."

"He said death was due to carbon monxide that collected in the house."

"The fear of tragedy was aroused at about 8 a.m. today when Mrs. Norman Lanum, Richard's mother, failed to reach the family by telephone."

"She then called Harold Tabor, a neighbor, asking him to check to see if the family car was in the drive."

"It was, so Tabor, of 1033 N. 33rd St. and another neighbor, Robert Sargent, of 959 N. 33rd. St went to the house to try to rouse Lanum."

"When that failed, they ripp;ed off the front door and found Lanum lying dead near the wall furnace that apparently caused his death."

"His wife and daughter were found unconscious in bed in a nearby bedroom."

"The Lanum baby was taken to the Tabor house next door until an ambulance arrived."

"Ralph J. Doyle, chier deputy sheriff, said the house was closed tight, apparently to keep the baby warm, allowing all oxygen to be consumed by the heater."

"Lanum was employed as a dry wall finisher with the Clark & Lanum Dry Wall Co."

"Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lanum, 26 Sullivan Dr., and Mr. and Mrs. Earl McKenzie, 3921 E. Olive St."

"The body is in the J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home where funeral arrangements are incomplete."

      Obituary
"The Decatur Herald and Review" (Decatur, IL) Sunday, November 8, 1959(page 3)

"DECATUR MAN DIES OF FUMES; WIFE, CHILD ILL"

"A Decatur woman was in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital last night, apparently from the same carbon monoxide poisoning that caused her husband's death."

"Richard D. Lanum, 22, of 1001 N. 33rd St., was asphyxiated and his wife, Sarah Katherine, 24, was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a wall heater, in their home, early yesterday morning or Friday night."

"Their two-week old daughter, Teresa Michelle, was also stricken by the fumes, but is in good condition in the hospital."

"Mr. Lanum was found on the floor of his house at 8:20 a.m., after his mother, Mrs. Norman Lanum, unable to reach him by phone, called a neighbor."

"The neighbor, Harold Tabor, of 1033 N. 33rd St., and Robert Sargent, 959 N. 33rd St., gained entrance to the house and found him."

"The cause of death and of Mrs. Lanum's illness was determined by tests."

"The possibility of food poisoning which had been suggested by some members of the family and by the doctor who handled the case was ruled out by tests conducted by Dr. Welland A. Hause, hospital pathologist."

"Dr. House said last night that samples of both Mr. and Mrs. Lanum's blood showed positive reactions to tests for carbon monoxide."

"The tests on Mr. Lanum definitely showed traces of the poison in sufficient quantity to cause death, Dr. Hause said."

"Mr. Lanum had apparently set up a fan behind the heater, causing the fumes to be blown into the room, rather than up the vents provided for ventilation."

"The wife and daughter apparently escaped death because they were in another room. The baby, least affected by the fumes, was farthest from the heater."

"County Coroner Phares G. Thompson said that an inquest will be held but that no date had been set."

"Mr. Lanum was born Aug. 1, 1937 in Decatur, a son of Norman and Corene Wattles Lanum. He married Sarah McKenzie in Decatur, June 23, 1956."

"A lifelong resident of the city, he was a co-owner of the Lanum & Neibert Dry Wall Contractors."

"He was a member of St. James Catholic Church."

"He leaves his wife and daughter, parents, and two sisters, Caroyln and Cheryl, both at home."

"His body is at the J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete."
