- Chester S. McKenzie, 91, of 350 Glen St., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2002, in Chambersburg Hospital after an extended illness. Since March, he had been a guest at Menno-Haven Nursing Center. Born Feb. 18, 1911, in Kauffman Station, he was a son of the late Harry S. and Ella May Seller McKenzie. A member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, he served variously as deacon, elder and vice president of Consistory for 30 years. A 1930 graduate of Chambersburg High School, he graduated also from Thompson College and in 1935 from Shippensburg University. He also participated in many specialized training seminars in civilian personnel administration in the United States. For more than 30 years, he worked in personnel administration with the Department of the Army, retiring in 1973 from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. During this time, he was a cadreman on civilian personnel matters for the office, Chief of Ordnance, Washington, D. C. ; as chief Management Employee Relations Branch; and as civilian personnel officer at Letterkenny. Interested in local community activities, especially in the restoration and preservation of historic artifacts, he was named Preservationist of the Year in 1986 by Franklin County Heritage Inc. He served on the boards of directors of United Way, Occupational Services Inc. and Kittochtinny Historical Society. A life member of Chambersburg Club, he was also a member of AARP's national division and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. For a number of years, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife, V. Eleze Poe McKenzie, whom he married in 1941; and two nephews, Arnold McKenzie and Marvin McKenzie, both of Chambersburg. A sister, Ada McKenzie Cole, and two brothers, Leslie K. and Howard, preceded him in death. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, 259 S. Main St. The Rev. Jeffrey Diller will officiate. Private burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg. The family requests the omission of flowers.
