- WINCHESTER, Va. — Linda Kathryn “Kate” (Preston) McKenzie, 59, of Winchester, Va., passed away following a two year battle with cancer on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Va. She was born June 14, 1954, in Frostburg, to John “Hack” Preston, of Frostburg and the late Ruth A. (Lindeman) Preston. In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Bobby” Preston. Kate was a registered nurse for 27 years at Winchester Medical Center, the last 17 of those she was a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse. She was also an alumna of Beall High School (class of 1972) and Allegany Community College. Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Darrell McKenzie; two sons, John Adam Preston McKenzie and wife Jessica and Jeffrey James McKenzie; step-son, Todd McKenzie and wife Jessica; granddaughter, Ryleigh Elizabeth McKenzie; step-granddaughters and grandson, Kaytlyn, Kylie and Nathan McKenzie; brother, John “Nut” Preston and wife Cindy; sisters, Sandra “Sandy” Webber and husband Paul, Donna “Duna” Preston and Ruthie Folk and fiance Kevin Carroll; numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and two very special friends, Sue Ann Walker “The Duck” Thorpe and Barrie “Bear” Riese. Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Ken Patrick and the Rev. Dr. Gabe Moya officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Marvin McKenzie, Darvin McKenzie, Gail McKenzie, Jason Preston, Paul Webber II and Bryon Folk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Kate’s honor can be made towards Blue Ridge Hospice at 333 W.
