Mr. Smith was a son of James H. Smith, Clarysville, and the late Mrs. Helen (Lavin) Smith. Mr. Smith was an employe of the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, a member of St. George Episcopal Church of Mt. Savage, a member of Kemp Lodge 154, AF & AM and a veteran of World War II. Surviving, in addition to his father, are his widow, Mrs. Jean (Crump) Smith; two daughters, Miss Linda Smith, Front Royal, Va.; and Mrs. Martha D. Aman, Cumberland; two sons, James D. Smith Jr., La Vale, and Paul T. Smith Arlington,. Va.; a brother, Herbert R. Smith, Clarysville; five sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Brode, Frostburg; Mrs. Katherine Hardy, Cresaptown; Mrs. Eleanor Murphy, Woodbridge, Va.; Mrs. Helen R. Long, Salisbury, Md.; Mrs. Willard LaRue, Martin's Ferry, Ohio. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted in St. John's Episcopal Church Tuesday at 11 a.m. Rev. Richard J. Brown will officiate and interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale. Pallbearers will be Charles Hice, Robert Cassidy, Clarence Felker, Edward Williams, John Sullivan and John Seifert.
