      The 5th Alabama was organized at Montgomery, Alabama on 5 May 1861. The first days was at Pensacola, Florida. The company fought at Seven Pines, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg, among other engagements. At Gettysburg the gallantry and skillful conduct of the company elicited from General Robert E. Lee his admiration and special thanks. Joseph Madison Wiggins was still in the trenches around Petersburg, Virginia when the war ended in April of 1865. Joe's first wife, Harriet Fountain is said to have haunted the old Hendrix homestead as she died soon after the Civil War. He later married Martha Hendrix.
