- Thomas married Elizabeth Betsy Blalock on January 27, 1828 in Lenoir, Burke Co., NC.
Their children were Clarissa, Tilman, Samuel, Isaac, Avery, Malinda, Preston, Charles, and Elmira Vance.
Thomas was the son of Matthew Vance and Barbary McVeigh.
In 1830 Thomas and Betsy Blalock are living in Burke Co. N. C. along with their eldest daughter Clarissa. By 1840 the y had moved to Yancey Co. NC and their family had grown t o include Samuel, Averu, Issac, Tillman and Melinda. It i s noted in the Lawsuit Concerning the Estate of Thomas Vanc e that he "died in the County of Yancey Now Mitchell" Co.
The of Thomas Vance, admitted to probate in the fall term 1 851 in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in Yancey Co unty reads as follows: "In the name of God, amen: I, thoma s Vance, sick and weak and low and is in his right mind, d o will all my property to my wife, all my lands, horses, ca ttle and sheep and hogs after pay all just debts, also abou t twelve hundred dollars in money. This 9th day of August , 1851" The witnesses were R.N. Penland and Carson Vance.
According to a copy of a letter that Issac Avery (Thomas Va nce's 3 rd son and 4th child) wrote to Robert Biggs: "My fa ther was of a roving disposition. He took us to the India n Territory in a covered wagon in 1896 before it became th e state of
Oklahoma."
