George followed his brother Andrew into battle at Shiloh in Tennessee where both were wounded. He was only there to visit his brother, but fought just the same. He states that he was not a Confederate soldier at that time. He had refused to enlist in the Confederate Army because he was too young. He and his brother returned home after being wounded. He later enlisted in Co. B 4th Mississippi Cavalry and was captured near Huntsville, Alabama. He was held prisioner at Camp Chase, Ohio, until the end of the war. He was released on May 16th, 1865. During the war George met Dr. D.C.A. Moses who was dying of congestant chill. George promised Dr. Moses that he would look after his wife Mary and their two small sons. After he was released from Camp Chase he returned to Franklin Co., Alabama and on Nov. 12, 1865 he married Mary Tabitha (Eskew) Moses. They moved to Tennessee, and later to Texas.
George and Mary had six children. They were: John O. Franklin Crowell, Cross Conquest Crowell, Annie Catherine (Crowell) Bertling, Lula Oma (Crowell) Ramsey, Minnie Virginia (born and died Aug. 7, 1877), and Lillie Alice (Crowell) Biggs. Mary's three children by Dr. Moses were Lucuis Newton "Newt" Moses, Luciene Syme Moses(twin to Newt born and died on Sept. 17, 1858) and Edward Ira Moses.
They lived in the Salt Flat area near Luling and raised grapes. George would go to Galveston, Texas, to sell his grapes.

George was living Texas Confederate Home in Austin, Texas at the time of his death. He had been there a little less that two years, having gone there at his own request, in order to be near his comrades in arms.
