- CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND — Frances Julia Swartley, 89, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at the Golden Living Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Flora Cunningham. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clark S. Swartley; four sisters, Catherine Williams, Mildred McKenzie, Edith Bauman and Irene Cunningham; and one brother, Samuel Cunningham.
Mrs. Swartley was a retired office manager for a local printing company. She attended Catholic Girl Central High School and was a Hospice volunteer for the Western Maryland Health System. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a member of the 4th District Democratic Women's Club, a member of the Goodfellowship Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the BPO Elks Club, a member of the Welcoming Committee of Booth Towers Tenants Association and the St. Mary's Senior Citizens Association.
Surviving are her four daughters, Donna VanMeter and husband Richard, Baltimore, Sharon Beal, Cumberland, Mary Lee Davies and husband Richard, Cumberland, Carol Jean Sanders and husband Michael, Warrenton, Va.; one brother, Leo Cunningham and wife Helen, Cresaptown; twelve grandchildren, Steve VanMeter and wife Kim, Baltimore, Beverly Ross and husband Brian, Baltimore, Arthur VanMeter, Baltimore, Mary Beth Robinson and husband Paul, Baltimore, and Nicole Ender and husband Matt, Baltimore, Todd Beal and wife Lucy, California, Greg Beal and wife Jody, Westminster, Eric Beal and wife Kim, Cumberland, Richard W. Davies Jr. and wife Jan, Eldersburg, Scott Davies and wife Farrah, Cumberland, Heather King and husband David, Front Royal, Va., and Melissa Sanders, Florida; 20 great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Sloan, Megan, Meridith, Jamie, Rachel, Natalie, Kristin and husband Drew, Haley, Sara, Zac, Katie, Nate, Blake, Olivia, Buck, Nicolas, Gracee, Gavin and Rylee.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com) on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday at 9 a.m. with Father Ty S. Hullinger officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Pallbearers will be Todd Beal, Greg Beal, Eric Beal, Steve VanMeter, Rich Davies and Scott Davies.
