Notes |
- Requiem mass for Michael F. McKenzie, 16, of Miltenberger Road, Ridgeley, who drowned Thursday in a farm pond at Seymour Bottom, will be celebrated Monday at 9 a. m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Authorities said Michael was in the pond with a neighborhood friend, 12-year-old Michael Smith. The McKenzie boy, who had been floating on a rubber raft, was standing near the bank of the pond, detaching a pillow-like device from the raft, when a breeze caused the raft to float toward deeper water. It was reported the youth tried to retrieve it and stepped into deep water and drowned. The Smith youth made an attempt to save him, but was unsuccessful. Time of the drowning was near 6:30 p. m. and rescue units from Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department, Cumberland Fire Department and the Cumberland Auxiliary Police recovered the body approximately an hour later. The farm pond, on the property of M. E. Heiskell, is described as being oblong and about 100 feet in length and half as wide. The body was found near the middle of the pond. West Virginia State Police from the Keyser detachment, Cpl. J. R. Potts and Trooper R. L. Johnson, said the McKenzie youth's brothers, Patrick and John, and sister, Mary, were playing near the pond when the drowning occurred. A coroner's jury of six men reported to Justice of the Peace Rozelle Presnell, acting coroner, at an inquest in Ridgeley, Thursday night, that the McKenzie youth died of "accidental drowning." The jury consisted of Donald Walters, foreman, and Donald Jewell, Randolph Lantz Jr., William Schoonover, James E. Weakley and Ronald McFadden. The body is at the George Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. The rosary will be recited there tomorrow at 8 p. m. Pallbearers will be James Van Meter, William Van Meter, Edward Fisher, Daniel McKenzie, Larry McKenzie and Larry Messick. The Cumberland News, June 10, 1967 [Michael was the son of Virgil DeSalles and Mary Elizabeth (Flynn) McKenzie].
Is buried in the St. Pater & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Cumberland, Maryland.
