Notes |
- Scottdale, April 1 - Mrs. Amy Porter, the oldest resident of this section, died at 8 o'clock last night at her home at 314 Chestnut street, aged 94 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was the widow of the late Moses Porter, a prominent farmer, who died in 1880, near here. In many respects, she was a wonderful woman and had a large friendship throughout the county. She was of a rarely uncomplaining and philosophical disposition and although bedfast for months, only during the last few days did she suffer. Her mental faculties and her memory were keen and clear to the last, and she knew all those whom she saw. Of an indomitable spirit, uncomplaining and unostentatious, she was as brave as any soldier, and cheerful and thoughtful of all, even on her death bed. She had fought the battle of life and felt she was going to a peaceful reward, and many who read this will sorrow that the end has come, and has left in bereavement especially her daughter Miss Lydia, who had been her constant companion 10 years. The funeral services will take place at the First Methodist Episcopal Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Porter was the daughter of Henry and Rachel Wade of near Cumberland, Md., and was born there August 12, 1809. Her father lived to be 96 years old, but her mother died at the age of 46. Mrs. Porter's grandmother, Mrs. Augustine Wade, was 96 (?) years old when she died. Emily or Amy Wade and Moses Porter were married at Wellersburg, Allegheny county, MD., (sic: Wellersburg is in Somerset Co., PA) April 17, 1828. There were 15 children born to them. Of these there still remain James Dennis Porter of Summit Mines; Geo. W. and Elisha C., farmers of near Scottdale; Dr. L. Lindley Porter, a physician practicing in Roslyn, Washington, and Miss Lydia Porter of 314 Chestnut street, Scottdale, with whom her mother lived. For the last year Mrs. Porter's only living sister out of eight children, Mrs. Ellen Arnold, of Frostburg, Md., who was 82 years old, November 3, 1903, had been living with her. Mrs. Arnold received a severe shock during the past few days by the news from Frostburg, that her oldest daughter, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Walsh, was dead there. Moses McKenzie, grandfather of Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Arnold, came from Scotland and served for seven years in the American Revolution, as did two uncles of the women. Mrs. Porter's second son, the late G. Ellis Porter, of Lonaconing, Md., on April 19, 1861, upon the arrival of the news that the Massachusetts troops going through Baltimore had been fired upon, made the first public speech in Maryland in favor of the Union, and formed a company of which he became a captain. He afterwards became a major. He was a descendant in the fifth generation of John Porter of Gloucestershire, England, who was driven out of the country for singing a song of his own composition that was not complimentary to the reigning monarch, George the First.
