An email from Michael McKenzie to Ray Leidinger in October, 2020:
Hi Ray:
I got interested in the James Noah McKenzie challenge and have been poking around on the Internet tonight to see what I could come up with. I have some speculation that I wanted to run past you.
I reviewed the 1910 census where James Minnick is referred to as Jacob Patrick Mckenzie’s “grandson”. I also noted the death certificate where he references his mother as being “Anna Minnick”.
Here starts the speculation:
Jacob Patrick’s daughter Anne Elizabeth McKenzie was born in 1867. When James Noah McKenzie was born in 1894, Anne would have been 27 years old.
I then pulled up the 1910 census (copy enclosed) which reflects Annie McKenzie Welsh and her husband, Joseph. A marriage date is not reflected but their first child, Joseph, was not born until 1897, three years after James Noah was born.
So, could Anne Elizabeth McKenzie who married Joseph Welsh have been the mother of James Noah Minnick McKenzie? Did she marry or interact with a Minnick and have James Noah before her marriage to Joseph Welsh?
Let’s look at the other daughters of Jacob Patrick McKenzie to see if they could have been the mother.
Anne’s sister Mary Cordelia Mckenzie married Robert Crawford Minnick in 1892. So, I scratch her off the list as being the mother of James Noah.
Jacob Patrick’s next daughter Erminda Catherine Mckenzie was born in 1876 but died in 1887, so we can scratch her off the list.
The next daughter, Rose Victoria died in 1883, so scratch her off.
The next daughter, Dorothy Agnes Mckenzie was born in 1882 so she would only have been 11-12 years old when James Noah was born. I think we can scratch her.
Frances Loretta Mckenzie, the next daughter, was born in 1884, so she was even younger than Dorothy Agnes, so I think we can scratch her.
So, we have only one daughter of Jacob Patrick of an appropriate age to have conceived James Noah in 1894. That would have been Anne Elizabeth. James (Noah) Minnick is listed as a “grandson” on the 1910 census. Given the last name, I think we easily scratch off the possibility that James was the son of one of Jacob Patrick McKenzie’s sons. James was a Minnick or else he would not have been listed as such on the 1910 census. The only daughter capable of producing James, the grandson, was Anne Elizabeth. Then we have the death certificate that lists James’ mother as “Anna” Minnick. Was Anna Minnick one in the same with Anne Elizabeth McKenzie?
I started poking around online trying to find western Maryland marriage records for the early late 1880’s and early 1890’s but gave up after many failed searches. It would be interesting to see if Anne Elizabeth McKenzie did marry a Minnick sometime within that time frame. If you have access to those records, it would be interesting to see what they reveal.
Short of the speculation listed above, I have nothing else to offer. I’d like your thoughts.
Regards
Mike
