Burner Sr., 63, of 221 W. First St., Frostburg, died Monday, June 16, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born March 26, 1934, in Klondike, he was the son of the late Alvin and Emma Burner, and the adopted son of William and Rose Cunningham. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Bruce and Evelyn Grecco; father-in-law, Hubert McKenzie; and sister-in-law, Catherine Twigg. Jack was employed by Kelly Springfield Tire Co. for 35 years, and at Frostburg State University Dining Services for five years. Well-known for his civic contributions in the community, Burner was honored while working for Kelly Springfield in 1979 with the National Spirit Award, and in 1988 Governor Schaefer awarded him with the Maryland's "Most Beautiful People Award." He also received the Community Service Award for the City of Frostburg in 1984. Jack concerned himself with several community organizations including the Lions, the Elks, the Eagles, and the Jaycees where he chaired and worked on committees such as the eye donor program, Defensive Driver Program, Heart Fund Drive, Bicycle Safety, Flag Pole and Flag projects, Smoke Detectors for Aged Program, Drug Abuse Programs, and Community Sign Committee. He served as president of the Twilight Baseball League; was a former basketball official, baseball umpire and soccer official; played baseball with Midland American Legion, Keysers Ridge, Klondike and Zihlman; and coached Klondike Church League Team for five years. Burner will always be remembered for the many parades held in Frostburg, and for his years of work with the Frostburg Jaycees. In another area of civic life, he was appointed to the Republican State Central Committee and then elected to a four-year term. A kind man, loving husband and gentle father, Jack married Mary Agnes Burner, and together they raised three children: two sons, Jack L. Burner Jr., and Ronald W. Burner and wife Brenda; and one daughter, Cathy Marie and special friend Pat Logsdon and son Jonathan.
