Charles Oscar McKenzie, 57, a former Grantsville resident, died at 7:30 o'clock Monday morning, Feb. 10, at his home near Finzel, after an illness of several months. He recently underwent an operation at the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where he was a patient for about two weeks, but was discharged and removed to his home three weeks ago. His death was not unexpected, as hope for his recovery had been abandoned. Although Mr. McKenzie was born near Boynton, Pa., most of his early life was spent in the Finzel section. He was a son of Uriah and Cordelia Hutzell McKenzie. He was well known in this community where he engaged in various occupations. His first occupation was farming, which he did for several years. For a time he also operated a sawmill. Later he became the proprietor of Buckeye Lodge, a roadside inn, three miles west of here. He conducted this establishment for a number of years, during which time he built a comfortable residence at Little Crossings and also the service station now owned by Dew Yommer. Some time ago, Mr. McKenzie disposed of the Lodge and his properties here and left the community. He later returned to the home near Finzel where he has since resided. Surviving are seven children, Jonas McKenzie, Baltimore, Mrs. Peter Miller, Oakland, Martin McKenzie, Frostburg, Cobey McKenzie, Finzel, Marshall and Wilbur McKenzie, Grantsville, and Myrtle McKenzie, at home; three brothers, Joseph McKenzie, Finzel, George McKenzie, Flintstone, Oren McKenzie, Cumberland; two sisters, Mrs. Olen Garlitz, Belleville, and Mrs. Roy Miller, Akron, O.; and twelve grandchildren. His estranged wife, Bessie McKenzie, resides in Frostburg. Mr. McKenzie was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg. Meyersdale Republican, February 13, 1941.
