Notes |
- Janice R. (McDermet) Maly, 84, of Albion, formerly of Fullerton, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Tabitha's Journey House in Lincoln.
Janice was born April 11, 1927, in Scottsbluff to Ralph B. and Maude R. McKenzie McDermet.
Janice earned her R.N. degree from Creighton St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1948.
On July 27, 1948, she married James C. Maly, M.D.
After a brief time in Anchorage, Alaska, the couple settled in Fullerton, where they provided medical care for the next 30+ years. Her husband passed away in 1982.
In 1985, she moved to Lincoln where for 20 years she served as housemother at UNL and Nebraska Wesleyan fraternities and sororities including Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Lambda Chi, Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Gamma Delta. Following her retirement, she moved to Albion and resided there until her death.
To their union was born six children, Diane Vigna, James Maly, Judith Nesbitt and Suzie Maly-Hergenrader, all of Lincoln, William Maly of Hancock Iowa, and Timothy Maly of Berthoud, Colo., son-in-law, Edward Vigna, and daughter- in-law, Jane Maly, both of Lincoln, daughter- in-law, Sallie Maly of Hancock, Iowa, and Catherine Maly of Berthod, Colo., grandchildren, Andrea Vigna Butler, Katherine Vigna Krol, John Vigna, Megan Maly, Elizabeth Maly Wigginton, Anne Maly, Connor Maly, Jamie Nesbitt Hagen, Tony Nesbitt, Micah Maly, Joel Maly, Allison Hergenrader, Alexandra Hergenrader, Kipp Hergenrader and Cameron Hergenrader; and seven great-grandchildren, Molly Butler, Brady Butler, Henry Butler, Zailynn Nesbitt, Zarra Nesbitt, Madelyn Krol and Charles Krol.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
After crashing their private airplane in the jungle of the Amazon River basin in Brazil in 1965, along with her husband, Janice co-founded a jungle clinic to serve the medical needs of the Mundurucu Indians and other Amazon tribes. For their heroic efforts to provide medical care to this isolated group of people, they were honored with the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award, and the Creighton University Outstanding Alumni Award. Their endeavor was chronicled in the book To Bucktail and Back…A Million Miles of Memories by Tom Allan, Omaha World-Herald Nebraska Byways Columnist who accompanied them to the Amazon jungle clinic for three weeks in 1966.
Janice was a long-time Husker fan and season ticket holder for almost 50 years. Her most memorable Husker game was the 1971 "game of the century". Her family contends she helped win the game for the Huskers by praying her rosary non-stop that day as she sat in the north end zone of the Oklahoma stadium! She enjoyed doing needlework and golfing.
Burial was in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery, Fullerton, NE.
