Per the research of ray Leidinger: John was a Private in the 1st Regiment, P.H.B. Cavalry, Company H. He enlisted 29 February 1864 and was discharged 10 June 1865.

Morning at His Home Near Narrows Park
Mr. John W. McKenzie dropped dead this morning at 5:30 o'clock at his home near Narrows Park, in the presence of his wife. The deceased worked all day yesterday and was in his usual state of good health when he went to bed last night. This morning he got up and started to make the fire, when he suddenly fell to the floor. His wife saw him fall and ran to his assistance to find him dead. Heart failure is presumed to have been the cause. He was 64 years of age, and besides his wife, leaves a family of grown children. He worked at one time on the city streets, but later had been doing laboring work wherever he could secure it. Coroner Conner was notified and viewed the body. An inquest was deemed unnecessary.
