A 21-year-old county woman was killed and three other persons were injured, one critically, when the car in which they were riding crashed against the rear of a heavy tractor-trailer on Route 40, eight miles east of Hancock, early this morning. The victim, Miss Betty Jane Porter, postmistress at Ellerslie, and daughter of Harry and Lydia (Lowery) Porter, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown. State Trooper Raymond V. McGwire, who investigated, said the accident occurred about 2:39 when the car driven by William E. Clauson, of Corriganville, headed toward Hagerstown, passed another vehicle and hit the trailer at a place known as Park Head Levels. Clauson's condition is considered serious at Washington County Hospital where he was admitted for observation and treatment of extensive cuts and possible head injuries. Surviving besides her mother and husband, are a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Johnson, of RD 2, and several nieces and nephews. The body will be at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. CUMBERLAND - Shirley Elizabeth Valentine, 91, of Cumberland, and residing in Ruther Glen, Va., passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at her home. Born Jan. 27, 1926, in Frostburg, Shirley was the daughter of the late Raymond L. Minnick and Stella M. (Robinson) Minnick. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, a grandson, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Shirley was a graduate of Fort Hill High School and stayed active with Club 43 for many years. She retired from Sears Roebuck and Company and attended the Living Word Lutheran Church. She was an accomplished seamstress for over 40 years who made many wedding dreams come true. Shirley was dearly loved by her family and will be forever missed. Shirley is survived by her son, William R. Valentine and wife, Ruthie, Little Orleans; her daughters, Carlene Llewellyn and husband, Gary, LaVale, Sharon L. Netzer, Fairless Hills, Pa., and Tammy S. Zufall and husband, Rick, Ruther Glen. Also in her much-loved family, she is survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mabel was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylva Jean Summers; infant son; infant brother and sister; four brothers, Raymond, Harold, Donald and Bernard; and son-in-law Joseph Summers. Mabel is survived by her daughters, Betty Lou, wife of William Albright, Meyersdale; Thelma, wife of William Triplett, Schellsburg; Lois, wife of Daniel Boyer, Fishertown; sons, Harold "Hap," husband of Donna Amick, Fishertown; Paul, husband of Erma Campbell, Brockway; sisters, Hilda Miller and Genevieve Wilhelm, both of Meyersdale; and Margaretta Festerman, Gap. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. Mrs. Miller was born in Allegany County, Md., on April 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Albert and Margaret Pearl (Minnick) Drees. She was married to her husband Harvey for 65 years and was able to care for him until his death in 2001. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church of Bedford and the St. Thomas Ladies Guild. Together with her husband they built and operated Miller's Shawnee Park Motel in Schellsburg. She was formerly employed at the shoe factory and enjoyed making home-made quilts throughout her lifetime. Mabel was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylva Jean Summers; infant son; infant brother and sister; four brothers: Raymond, Harold, Donald and Bernard and son-in-law, Joseph Summers. SALISBURY, Pa. — Evelyn Laura Ringler, 88, of Salisbury, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born February 1, 1926 at New Germany, she was the daughter of the late Raymond & Laura (Stephen) Broadwater. Mrs. Ringler was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley “Hime” McKenzie and her second husband, Walter “Ben” Ringler; six brothers, Elbert, Homer, Robert, Allen, Don & Wayne Broadwater; and four sisters, Bessie Sangston, Helen Robeson, Rella Albright and Melva Isella. Mrs. Ringler was a machine operator for New England Gear Works. Surviving is a sister, Norma Petenbrink and husband, Ronnie, Louisburg, N.C., and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Highway, Salisbury, on Monday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. with the Rev.
