He had spent the greater part of his lifetime on his farm near the Cunningham Bridge, but had spent the last, couple of years of his life on the Keyser farm near Owensdale, where he died. The deceased was a son of the late Moses and Amy Wade Porter, and leaves a brother and sister, George W. Porter, Sr., of near Scottdale, and Miss Lydia Porter of Scottdale. Mr. Porter was married twice, his first wife being Kate Williams of near Menden. The second wife was Elizabeth Owens, who survives him. The children living who were born to the first union are Thomas Walter Porter, M. (illegible) Porter, George W. Porter, Jr., of Porter and Stoner of Scottdale, Mrs. Mahlon F. Stoner and H. Clinton Porter of near Scottdale; Mrs. Allie B. Gault of Tyrone church, and G. Ellis Porter of Los Angeles, California; and Mrs. J. H. Owens of Toledo, Iowa. Scottdale, April 1 - Mrs. Amy Porter, the oldest resident of this section, died at 8 o'clock last night at her home at 314 Chestnut street, aged 94 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was the widow of the late Moses Porter, a prominent farmer, who died in 1880, near here. In many respects, she was a wonderful woman and had a large friendship throughout the county. She was of a rarely uncomplaining and philosophical disposition and although bedfast for months, only during the last few days did she suffer. Her mental faculties and her memory were keen and clear to the last, and she knew all those whom she saw. Of an indomitable spirit, uncomplaining and unostentatious, she was as brave as any soldier, and cheerful and thoughtful of all, even on her death bed. She had fought the battle of life and felt she was going to a peaceful reward, and many who read this will sorrow that the end has come, and has left in bereavement especially her daughter Miss Lydia, who had been her constant companion 10 years. The funeral services will take place at the First Methodist Episcopal Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Porter was the daughter of Henry and Rachel Wade of near Cumberland, Md., and was born there August 12, 1809. Her father lived to be 96 years old, but her mother died at the age of 46. Mrs. Porter's grandmother, Mrs. Augustine Wade, was 96 (?) years old when she died. Emily or Amy Wade and Moses Porter were married at Wellersburg, Allegheny county, MD., (sic: Wellersburg is in Somerset Co., PA) April 17, 1828. There were 15 children born to them. Of these there still remain James Dennis Porter of Summit Mines; Geo. W. and Elisha C., farmers of near Scottdale; Dr. L. Lindley Porter, a physician practicing in Roslyn, Washington, and Miss Lydia Porter of 314 Chestnut street, Scottdale, with whom her mother lived. For the last year Mrs. Porter's only living sister out of eight children, Mrs. Ellen Arnold, of Frostburg, Md., who was 82 years old, November 3, 1903, had been living with her. Mrs. Arnold received a severe shock during the past few days by the news from Frostburg, that her oldest daughter, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Walsh, was dead there. Moses McKenzie, grandfather of Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Arnold, came from Scotland and served for seven years in the American Revolution, as did two uncles of the women. Mrs. Porter's second son, the late G. Ellis Porter, of Lonaconing, Md., on April 19, 1861, upon the arrival of the news that the Massachusetts troops going through Baltimore had been fired upon, made the first public speech in Maryland in favor of the Union, and formed a company of which he became a captain. He afterwards became a major. SCOTTDALE, March 10 — A triple funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Jacobs Creek Methodist Episcopal Church near here for Arthur J. Porter and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Vance Porter who were killed by the explosion of a carbide plant in the basement of their home west of town and the subsequent fire Saturday evening, and for their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, 12 years old, who died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in the explosion. The explosion occurred about ?:45 o clock, just after the members of the family had eaten supper. Mr. and Mrs. Porter and Sarah Elizabeth were in the kitchen, it is said. An elder daughter Cecelia and son Ivan had come to the Y M C A here to attend a meeting. In another part of the house lived Mr. Porter's father, George W. Porter, 87 years old and the father's daughter, Miss Dessa. They escaped practically unhurt. Mrs. Porter is believed to have been killed instantly or about so. When the blast wrecked the home, the stove was flung against Mr. Porter, pinning him to the floor. Both of Sarah's legs were broken and mangled. Suffering agony, the child attempted to free her father. Both saw that it was useless, and the father told Sarah to get out. The building by this time was a mass of flames. How she did it, Sarah could not explain, but she was found outside the building when firemen arrived, her hair burned off, and her hands, face, neck and back scorched. At the Memorial Hospital of Mount Pleasant, one foot was amputated, and preparations were being made to remove the other when death relieved her suffering. She died a few minutes after 9 o'clock Sunday morning. From her was learned about all that could be about the explosion. The aged father and his daughter lived in the front of the house. They were able to escape before fire reached them. The force of the blast tore up the floor of their apartments, and Mr. Porter walked out on the beams. He escaped with scratches and bruises. The explosion was so terrific that it caused the walls of the house, a frame structure, to spread, and the roof collapsed. At the same time, a water tank in the attic crashed through to the basement. The exact cause of the blast will never be known. On Friday, Mr. Porter had received a shipment of carbide, a variety different from what he had been using, it is said, the funnel at the top and a safety device. Only three-quarters of a pound of carbide should have dropped into the water at a time. It is believed that something was wrong with the safety device and allowed an excessive quantity of carbide to drop, causing increased gas pressure. How it was ignited has not been explained. The explosion was apparently in the basement. The condition of the body indicated that Mr. Porter may have suffered. While the lower part of the body was burned away, the face was almost untouched. Mrs. Porter was terribly burned. The house was destroyed. The Scottdale Fire Department was called and worked faithfully until 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. The house was all ablaze when the firemen got there, and the supply water from the wells, the cistern and a reservoir that was on the farm was used. Twenty-three sections of hose were laid and the best that could be done was pump and keep a small stream of water running in that dampened the debris enough, so the men could dig for the bodies. About 1 o'clock the bodies were found. The firemen were directed by Sara Elizabeth where the bodies might be found and it was here they dug and found the father and not four feet away, the mother. George W. Porter was taken to the John Buttermore farm house nearby, and the daughter Dessa went to a neighbor. Mr. Porter was secretary-treasurer of the Westmoreland County Farm Loan Association. He had been engaged in farming. He was once the owner of a "trick" horse, Bonner, which was exhibited at county fairs and which performed like a circus animal. He is survived by his daughter, Cecelia, his son, Ivan, his father, George W. Porter, and two sisters, Miss Dessa, at home, and Mrs. Buell C. Boyd of Scottdale. Mrs. Porter is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron F. Stoner, near Mount Nebo, and four brothers, John B. Stoner of Mulberry street, Albert V. and E. A. Stoner of Homestead avenue and L. 0. Stoner of Mount Nebo. The Connellsville Weekly Courier, March 10, 1927. | Porter, Arthur John (I13550)

See the notes asociated with John's alleged father, John Porter (b. abt. 1690) for the questions which exist as to whether John Thomas Porter, Jr. was the father of Gabriel McKenzie Porter.
Regarding Rose Meadows:
John Porter settled between Cumberland and Frostburg in 1792 on a farm known as Rose Meadows, from the profusion of wild roses which grew there. John built a substantial house on a south slope which remained in the family until about 1864. At that time, the owner, William R. Porter, sold it to a mining company who wanted it for the coal and tan-bark. The homestead came back into the family about 1916 when it was purchased by Walter and Celia Porter Engle. There is no trace of the house today, but a sketch painting thereof is in the possession of the Engle family. The Porter Cemetery, sometimes called the Rose Meadows Cemetery, is located a short distance north of the site. (From the book "A Genealogy of the Porter Family of Maryland, West Virginia, Michigan" by Samuel Doak Porter.

The following email was sent to Don Kagle by Alan Williams on September 10, 2018. In essence the hunt for the parents of John, Moses and Henry Porter goes on as of September, 2018.
I do appreciate that info Dick, I was unaware of the Scritchfield effort.
We are cousins of the Scritchfields through Margaret Porter, born in Bedford County PA 1805 and died there in 1852, my 2nd Cousin 4 x removed. She married John Burley, and one of their children, Catherine, born 1838, married Samuel Scritchfield in 1863.
Margaret Porter was a child of William Porter and Mary Nelson and a granddaughter of Moses Porter and Margaret McKenzie.
John, Moses and Henry, Porter Brothers, are the oldest verifiable links in our line. Samuel Doak Porter (SDP) and Col. McKenzie (whose notes we hope will yield insight into their thinking) recounted the idea of the Singing Emigrant, John Porter, Catholic/Jacobite protester landing in Maryland @1715 and marrying the Huguenot of Swiss origin, Elinor Durier.
That story has been in dispute since it first saw print, and a Baltimore Sun article in 1912 that claimed John was an ‘Irish immigrant who landed in Boston’ got an angry rebuke in the next week’s letters to the editors from Glissan T. Porter, lawyer and newspaperman of Allegany County, who faithfully recounted the story SDP printed in the Bluebook.
Since then, based on a baptismal record for a John Porter 1697 found in England, people have ‘built trees’ going back to Charlemagne. (I don’t know why it’s always Charlemagne, apparently he was father to us all.)
We’ve got so many lines of investigation open into who Henry John and Moses parents were! But its far to early to burden you all with the possibilities. I am certain that
A. They had parents.
B. They are Brothers.
C. We have dug into many of the same ‘suspects’ that SDP and others have examined. So many, in fact, that I’ve become only too conversant with all the Porter/Portes/Borter lines of the Mid-Atlantic. I’ve had to build so many family trees to keep track of them so we can avoid running over old clues and thinking them to be fresh.
That said, we don’t think we’re at a brick wall. Now with DNA and better organized records, we’re able to fairly quickly rule a theory in or out of play. Part of the problem is that SDP claimed many children for our First John, quickly announced that ‘nothing more is known of them’ for 4, and then also passed Henry quickly out of view, so the bulk of his work revolves around (solely) John and Moses in Allegany County and their descendants.
People have long associated John Henry and Moses with the ‘Arnold Settlement’ and had assumed a bridge back to Carrollton. That’s where we are. Asserting anything back to the 15th Century is wishful thinking. | Porter, John Thomas Jr. (I00099)
