GLASGOW RESIDENT KILLED BY TRAIN
FRANK MCKENZIE STRUCK BY C 7 A FREIGHT
IN GLASGOW YARDS WESDNESDAY AFTERNOON
"Frank McKenzie, about 78 years of age, and many years a resident of Glasgow, was instantly killed at 4:56 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a west bound Chicago & Alton freight train No. 83 in the C. and A. yards at Glasgow about 100 yards from the depot."
"It is said that McKenzie, who had been hoeing potatoes on a tract of land near the railroad, was walking west in the middle of the railroad track when he was struck by the train. Engineer Montgomery of Slater and Conductor Fletcher, also of Slater, were in charge of the train. They were not held for investigation. The body was thrown a long distance from the track and was badly mangled."
"Mr. McKenzie is survived by one daughter who lives in Columbia. His wife, three daughters (should be three sons), and a son (should be a daughter) all died a number of years ago. He was a man who kept to himself a great deal and little is known about his intimate life. He was a carpenter by trade."
"Thursday morning it was not known whether an inquest would be held or not."

Mike,
The dates you have are correct. My source was a death certificate and Sunset Hill Cemetery listings. I do know that many years later a few family members put up new stones, and did not have all the correct data.
Sincerely

Notes sent by Phyllis Rosley from Gary Porter on January 10, 2015
Norman was orphaned in 1855 at age 4 and, with his three sisters, raised by relatives.
About 1870, he married Anna Stair (1850 - 1875), the daughter of Augustus Stair (originally spelled Stohr, immigrants from Hesse, Germany) and produced sons Oscar Howard and William Augustus and two daughters who apparently died at or near birth. Anna herself died prematurely of pneumonia in 1875 and two years later Norman asked Anna's sister, Sarah Stair, to marry him. She is reported to have said "not until you get a headstone for my
sister," which apparently was speedily done. Norman's marriage (on December 18, 1877) to "Sarah E. Stoer" (sic) is recorded in records of the Wellersburg Reformed Church, Somerset County, Pa. A fee of $3.00 was paid. Earlier that year (August 28) Norman's Uncle Thomas Jackson Porter and Aunt Rebecca Porter had left him 39 acres of land in Londonderry Township, Pa., including all the buildings and improvements. Later in 1877 he sold some of this land to his sister Sarah (Porter) Clites. He sold additional land to Daniel Clites (Sarah's husband) in 1890 and to Shannon Brant in 1891. Norman and Sarah produced sons Harry Robert (1878), John Ross (1882) and James Vernon (1884) and a daughter, Anna M. Porter who died in 1882 at age 2. When Sarah also died (in 1890) Norman is said to have farmed out the boys to various families, taking son John Ross to live on the Cook farm in Ellerslie, Md. Norman worked as a hosteler on the Pennsylvania Railroad and when each of his boys turned 15 he also got them jobs on the railroad. Norman served as president of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America Lodge located in Ellerslie. He lived in a house just below the present Porter Cemetery near Stringtown, Pa. and donated the land used for the cemetery. In August 1917, Norman was living with son John Ross at John's farm in Ridgeley, West Virginia, when he fell from a peach crate onto a stake. Although treated at the Western Maryland Hospital, peritonitis set in from a lacerated bowel and a hernia, causing his death at age 66 years, 6 months, 9 days. Louis Stein was his undertaker. Norman's will, which had been signed April 11, 1907, named James Vernon as Executor and divided Norman's estate into fifth's, a fifth for each of his four living sons (Oscar, Harry, John and James), and a fifth to be divided by Clara (Lowery) Porter, (by then the widow of William Augustus) and their daughter Mildred Viola Porter. | Porter, Norman (I44500)

He began his career at Howard High School in Altholton, as a biology, geography, and political science teacher. He then worked for the United States Department of Agriculture developing lesson plans for teachers based on recent research at the Beltsville Station in Maryland. Later, Blaine took a position as a park naturalist with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission in Washington, D.C. During his tenure there, he was the developer and director of the Clearwater Nature Center in Clinton, the first nature center in Prince Georges County. Because of his work at the nature center, Blaine was assigned as a section head, supervising all interpretation conducted away from the nature center leading to his development of the Patuxent River Park in Brandywine, including Pataxent Outdoor Programs, Patuxent Discovery, and the Urban Nature Project. At the Patuxent River Park, Blaine constructed a boardwalk nature trail through the river wetlands that was innovative for that time. In the early 80s, Blaine moved his family to Oakdale, Calif., to begin a career in construction, which had been his hobby, and worked for J.L. Bray and Sons. Later, he co-founded Construction Management Corporation Inc. in Modesto, from which he retired in 2006. Blaine was well-known for his cooking skills and his use of all varieties of chile peppers. For 10 years, he hosted his annual "Pepper Party" for friends and family featuring a large variety of chile peppers in the food creations. This annual event culminated in Blaine being featured as the "Pepper King" in the October 1996 Sunset Magazine, which included several of his recipes. Along with his love of gardening, Blaine enjoyed his annual Alaskan salmon fishing trips with his buddies, and the weekly happy hour event with good champagne. Blaine is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane (Zimowski) Griffith; sisters, Nancy Grant of Cumberland, Janie Cumiskey of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Joe Griffith of Portsmouth, Va.; and sister-in-law, Glenna Griffith of Oakdale; three children, Jennifer Griffith of Santa Barbara, Ben (Christy) Griffith of Riverbank, and Rebecca Griffith of Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren, Bailey Thompson of Tehachapi, Jackson and Jade Griffith of Riverbank. To honor Blaine, make a donation in his memory to the Alexander Cohen Hospice House c/o Community Hospice Foundation, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356. Their wonderful staff provided safe and trusting care in Blaines final days. Also thank you to Larry and Nancy Podolsky for their caring support and Mike Mack for the many visits and chocolate milk deliveries.
