Cousin Carol Vivier says Abraham's first name was Henry, and like so many he went by his middle name. But we have no explanation for the Sarah McIntyre, unless he married two different Sarahs OR perhaps Sarah Barnes had a previous marriage to a McIntyre. I do not know where Carol got the info on Abraham's first name, someone sent that info to her but she didn't remember who. [from Genie Ragan in email April 25, 2009]

10110 Todd CHRISTOPHER. Todd's grandmother - CUMBERLAND - Virginia Lee "Nootie" Christopher, 91, of Cumberland, passed away, Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at WMHS-Memorial Campus. Born May 25, 1916 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Edith (Taylor) Shillingburg and Grover Cleveland "Shill" Shillingburg. She was also preceded in death by her husband Joseph C. Christopher; and one sister, Mary Jane Davidson. Mrs. Christopher was co-owner, of Christopher Photo Lab, Inc., which she co-founded in 1946. The company presently operates as Christopher Imaging, Inc. Nootie's laundry room turned into the Lab Chemical Mix Room in the basement of the original business location on Glenmore Street. She would operate a piece of equipment while bouncing her baby daughter on her knee. She and Joe worked everyday together building the new business and getting it established. When not working in production she would also be the bookkeeper, while keeping house upstairs, cooking and raising her family. There was no vacation for the first 25 or so years for Nootie and Joe, until the last of their 30 years owning Christopher Photo Lab, did they finally do some traveling. A well deserved retirement came in 1976 when son, Dave purchased the business. The hard working couple were then able to catch up on those vacations and yard work. Joe and Nootie were particular proud that their business, that began in 1946, is now being operated by the third generation of their family by Scott and Todd Christopher. Nootie lost her co-worker and love of her life, her husband, Joe on October 2, 2005. Since then, she spent time with family visits, reading, and remaining in her home with her memories and familiar surroundings. She will be very much missed by family and friends, as she was loved so by the family, as she continued her entertaining and witty ways and conversations with anyone she met. She is now with Joe and her God, who she spoke with each day in her "prayer room" where she could see her beloved mountains, sky and clouds from the window. Our mom was "ONE BEAUTIFUL LADY." Surviving are one daughter, Anne Gregg Christopher Mazzone, Rawlings; one son, David L. "Dave" Christopher and wife Rena, Cumberland; seven grandchildren, Lynn Martin and husband Todd and their children Christopher, Tyler and Zachary, Clarksville, Scott Christopher and wife Judy and their children, Sheena, Dane and Brendan, Oldtown, Todd Christopher and wife Julie and their children, McKenzie and Paige, Lakewood, W.Va., Jay Christopher, Arlington, Va., Tony Mazzone and wife Jessica and their children Madalyn and Johnny, Ridgeley, W.Va., Chris Mazzone and fiancé Amanda Winfield, Cumberland, and Nick Mazzone, Cumberland; one sister, Nadine Skidmore and family, Bridgeport, W.Va.; a cousin, John T. Taylor, Westminster. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com ) on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. 10113 Tom Speelman lists the wedding date as December 24, 1876.

From recollections of Ray Leidinger, Jr. 25 May, 1998, "let me tell you a little about my great-grandmother, Sarah Ann (McKenzie) McKenzie. She married her cousin, James Sebastian McKenzie and was in the Catholic line of the McKenzies. James Sebastian converted to Catholicism several days before their marriage in the Catholic Church. That church building is still in use. Sarah was a mid-wife, and she delivered many of the McKenzie babies. Catherine McKenzie Kelly, a cousin, now deceased, told me that "Aunt Sally" delivered her and all her brothers ansd sisters. Sarah had a small book which she kept in which she listed all of the deliveries she made, and usually the amount that was owed her for her services, which she usually did not receive. When she died, the state took her book because it was, in many cases, the only record that the state had of the births. She lived with my grandparents until her death on December 18, 1933.

Also per Ray Leidinger: George, Susannah, Sarah Ann and her husband, James Sebastian are buried on the same plot in St. Patrick Cemetery, Cumberland, Maryland.

Sarah Ann was christianed on 18 May 1857 at St. Patrick Church, Cumberland, Maryland by Rev. M. O"Reilly.

Mrs. Sarah A. McKenzie, aged 77 years, widow of James McKenzie, died this morning at 6:25 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bernadette Hoenicka, wife of Reid C. Hoenicka, Chief of the Cumberland Fire Department, 46 Bedford street, with whom she resided for years. Mrs. McKenzie had been seriously ill for the past month. She was a lifelong resident and was known by many as kindly, charitable and helpful. For the past 50 years she has been engaged as a practical nurse, and her name appears on the birth certificates of scores of well known persons here. Many will remember her for untiring aid and ever willing helpfulness during time of illness or trouble. She is survived by the following daughters: Mrs. Grover Zink, Mrs. John Nimick, Mrs. Susan Wickard, and Mrs. Hoenicka. Funeral arrangements are being made by Stein's. 10126 Tressler Laid to Rest Monday In Union Cemetery
World War Veteran Mentally Ill, Hanged Himself in Borough Lockup
Chauncey Tressler, 49, who committed suicide early last Friday morning by hanging himself with a rope fastened to a cell in the Meyersdale borough lockup, was laid to rest in Union Cemetery on Monday afternoon with military honors. Mr. Tressler leaves his widow, Mrs. Verna (Burley) Tressler and six children as follows: Mrs. Ralph Yoder, Meyersdale; Chauncey, Jr., Conrad, Betty, Sadie and Doris, all at home. Chauncey Tressler, son of Conrad and Sarah (Shumaker) Tressler, was born at Glade City, near Meyersdale, on February 23, 1892. He was employed for a number of years as a trackman on both the B. & O. and Western Maryland railroads. Since serving an enlistment in the U.S. Army during World War No. 1, Mr. Tressler has never enjoyed good health, but numerous attempts to establish a pension claim for him proved unsuccessful. Therefore, he and his family have been dependent upon relief since his inability to earn a livelihood at manual labor. Worry over his physical condition and the fact that he was unable to provide for his family is said to have brought about a mental condition that resulted in the tragedy mentioned in last week's issue of The Republican. For several days prior to the suicide the family did not feel secure with Mr. Tressler in the house. It is said he threatened to kill his wife and children on several occasions. Mrs. Tressler appealed to the officials of the law to have her husband admitted to the County Home and Hospital for treatment. He was placed in the borough lockup about 8:30 Thursday evening and it was intended to take him to Somerset on Friday morning. At 1:30 a.m. Friday, when two friends visited the lockup, he was lying on the cot in his cell, peaceful and apparently contented, while a brother-in-law, Carl Burley, in another cell, was violent from the effects of a prolonged drinking spree. It was about 3:40 Friday morning when Officer John Bittner accompanied by Austin McVicker, an early riser, went to the lockup and found Mr. Tressler hanging by a rope from the top of his cell. His body was still warm and they cut him down with the hopes of being able to restore life by artificial respiration, but this proved unsuccessful. Coroner F. E. Sass, of Boswell, when notified, stated that an inquest would not be required, so his dead body was removed to the R. Reich & Son morgue to prepare for burial. Funeral services for Chauncey Tressler were conducted at the family home on North Street Monday afternoon by Rev. Howard K. Hilner, pastor of the Lutheran Church. Burial was made in Union Cemetery. Post 112 American Legion furnished the pallbearers, a firing squad and a bugler to execute military rites over a departed comrade.

10144 Two pedestrians were admitted to Miners' Hospital yesterday within an hour after being victims of similar mishaps on West Main Street, within a distance of a block. The first victim at 1:30 p. m. was a near-blind 63-year-old man, Reginald Crowe, and the second, a 71-year-old matron, Mrs. Clementine Jones, who entered the hospital at 2:30 p. m. Both were struck by motor vehicles, Crowe by an automobile at the Main and Water Street intersection, and Mrs. Jones by a truck at Broadway and Main Streets. Hospital attaches said that they were informed that Crowe, who walks with a white cane, stepped from the sidewalk directly in the path of a car operated by Daniel McMurdo, Clarysville. McMurdo, said to be traveling at a slow speed, stopped and assisted the man into his car and took him to Miners' Hospital, where he was treated for slight bruises on one of his hands. He left the hospital later in the day. Crowe resides with his brother, Former Mayor Frederick Crowe, a member of the Allegany County Liquor Control Board. Mrs. Jones, struck by a truck operated by Gordon Morgan, Carlos, remained in the hospital today for observation after complaining of pains on the side of her head. Police said that Morgan, whose car was making a turn at the street Intersection, was driving at a very slow rate of speed, and that he stopped immediately. City Police Donald Griffith took the woman to the hospital in an automobile. Mrs. Jones, a resident of National, is the mother of Joseph William Jones, Midland, whose family is being aided by the Jones Fund while he and his wife and daughter are patients at the State Sanitarium, Sabillasvllle.
